Machine Aesthetic

I am showing in a really interesting touring exhibition, Machine Aesthetic, curated by artists, Simón Grannell and Eric Butcher. The exhibitions responds to contemporary fine art practices that "engages with the notion of mechanisation in a sophisticated range of ways; from artists who exploit the materials, processes and techniques of machine production, incorporating machined materials into their work, to those who do not engage physically with machines at all, but adopt a mechanised methodology in the process of manufacture, disciplining their minds and bodies to behave like machines."

The exhibition opens at Gallery North in Newcastle with a private view on Monday 9th December and carrying on until 30th January before moving on to Arts university Bournemouth, University of Lincoln, Norwich University of the Arts and Transition Gallery, London through 2014. I will be showing The Jump, a painted version of Chris Marker's classic short film, La Jetee. Other artists in the show include Emma Hart, Dan Hays, Michael Roberts, Natasha Kidd andTim Knowles. Misdirect Movies - Meter Room

Misdirect Movies at Meter Room, Coventry - 9/11/13 – 1/12/13
Artists: Rosa Barba, Andrew Bracey, Dave Griffiths, Cathy Lomax, Elizabeth McAlpine, David Reed and John Rimmer. Dave Griffiths, John Rimmer.
Misdirect Movies is an exhibition that explores new possibilities of collage using material gleaned from cinema. Meter Room, Coventry is the final leg of the exhibition tour that has visited The Royal Standard, Liverpool; Standpoint Gallery, London, and Greyfriars, Lincoln. Dave Griffiths will be showing a new commission made especially for the exhibition at Meter Room. The private view is at 6-8pm on Friday 8th November, all are welcome to attend this free event.
This exhibition has developed from the research interests and artworks of the curators, Andrew Bracey and John Rimmer. The selected artists employ cinematic imagery to re-employ film narrative and explore new forms of materiality outside of cinema. With access to the internet and the digitalisation of film, artists are now able to appropriate films to create different and innovative approaches to collage. The exhibition features a wide range of media, from projections and monitor-based work through to digital prints, artist’s books, painting and even a microfiche viewer.

The artists bridge the analogue and the digital. Rosa Barba exhibits every issue of Printed Cinema. These artist’s books have been published alongside her film projects and include film stills, text and photographs. Andrew Bracey is interested in the power of the still image in film. Ensemble Cast is a new animation that features a cast of 1500 film stars reduced to one restlessly moving head. Dave Griffiths’ recent work dwells on the physical and fictive borders of cinema, often employing the projectionist’s cue dot to activate the narrative potential of marginal images. Cathy Lomax keeps an on-going visual diary of all the films that she has watched, selecting one image from each to make into a small, rapidly executed painting. Elizabeth McAlpine compiles the missed footage from Nicolas Roeg's cult thriller Don't Look Now that a viewer did not see, due to them blinking. David Reed's animation references John Ford's western The Searchers. It also recalls an earlier personal experience where the artist accidently discovered a cave used in the Ford’s film. John Rimmer’s Interference gathers together personal and filmic references. Found footage of Philosopher and theorist’s heads, scenes from Annie Get Your Gun, commercials and other sourced material combine to form a mental landscape.

Nottingham Castle Open 2013

Nottingham Castle Open 2013 - Nottingham Castle I am showing 2 Reconfigure Paintings in The Nottingham Castle Open this year. One is a small Gouache on a lithograph of Paul Delarouche's Execution of Lady Grey and the other is a blown up vinyl piece of Ingres' Grande Odalisque. My original painted version was a small acrylic paint on book illustration that has been increased in size and printed at the size of Ingres' original painting that hangs in the Louvre. The selectors were Holly Slingsby, Emily Speed and Roger Malbert. Other artists include Tether, Yelena Popova, Wayne Burrows, Simon Raven, Steven Ingman and Craig Fisher.

Misdirect Movies

Misdirect Movies - Greyfriars Misdirect Movies is an exhibition I have curated with John Rimmer and the outing in Lincoln is the 3rd of 4 venues, where it is part of Frequency Digital Arts festival. I will be premiering a new commission at Greyfriars, Lincoln. Ensemble Cast is a looped one minute film created from 1500 movie stars morphed into one single pulsing head.

Misdirect Movies is a touring exhibition that explores new possibilities of collage using material gleaned from cinema. The exhibition features seven national and international artists: Rosa Barba, Andrew Bracey, Dave Griffiths, Cathy Lomax, Elizabeth McAlpine, David Reed and John Rimmer.
Misdirect Movies focuses on the impact of digital technologies in film and the visual arts and how the digital is forging revolutionary changes in making art and its presentations. Artists’ use of appropriation and the principles of collage have become a dominant force when working with cinema as a source material. The digital revolution has re-opened artist’s questioning of the materiality and non-material nature of the medium of collage.
The show opens on Friday 4th October 6-8pm and runs until 26th October, it is open Thursday to Saturday prior to Frequency and open every day during the festival.
Address: The Greyfriars, Broadgate, Lincoln, LN2 1HQ

Reliquary

Reliquary is a group show at Syson in Nottingham of 5 artists and is curated by Jennie Syson. The exhibition opens on Thursday 20th June and runs until 23rd August. I will be showing several Transitory Paintings.

This exhibition is concerned with how contemporary artists approach objects as containers – as a reliquary contains objects of devotion – vessel like containers and even shelf like structures made by sculptors often evoke or suggest the same hint at the possibility of containing or presenting something desirable. As nineteenth century collectors’ cabinets of curiosity held special and totemic items: artists, curators and collectors still maintain a desire to contain and present beautiful objects within vessels. The picture frame itself, or the pages of a book could also be described as a container for object veneration.

Mondegreen Ekphrasis

Mondegreen Ekphrasis - The Collection Just as a pebble thrown into a pond produces a series of ever-expanding rings, visual ripples of inspiration have emanated from great works throughout the history of art. Taking this precedent of emulation as a premise, MA Fine Art and MA Design students from The University of Lincoln are brought together by MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice student Ashleigh McDougall in a new exhibition at The Collection.
The concepts of collaborative practice and appropriation of images and ideas are explored in a changing installation that grow and evolve each week. This will expose the process of ekphrasis; the description of one work of art through the creation of another. With a new piece by lecturer Andrew Bracey as the starting point, the exhibition opens in The Collection’s Courtyard Gallery on 15 April and runs until 12 May, 2013.
Mondegreen Ekphrasis features the work of Shahira Allen, Andrew Bracey, Lewis Gaukrodger, Amir Ghazi-Noory, Diane E. Hall, Victoria Hall, Linda Hollaway, Laura Johnson, Chutatib Promgul, Gemma Rabionet, Jessica Rawlings, Duncan Rowland, Carlos Ruiz Brussain, and Miranda Jingyan Zhang, and is curated by Ashleigh McDougall.

Misdirect Movies

Misdirect Movies is a touring exhibition that explores new possibilities of collage using material gleaned from cinema. It opens at The Royal Standard, Liverpool for a preview 6-9pm on Friday 15th march (16/3/2013 - 31/3/2013) and travels to Standpoint Gallery, London (5/7/2013 - 3/8/2013) Greyfriars, Lincoln (4/10/2013 - 26/10/2013) and Meter Room, Coventry (8/11/2013 - 1/12/2013). I have curated it with John Rimmer.

Orson Welles’ unfinished version of Don Quixote features a scene where Quixote slashes at a screen in a cinema. This scene acts as a lynchpin for the ideas contained within the curatorial strategy of this exhibition, expanding on the notion of Quixotic, intertexturality and the slippage of reality and illusion. The show features work by Rosa Barba, Andrew Bracey, Dave Griffiths, Cathy Lomax, Elizabeth McAlpine, David Reed and John Rimmer. The selected artists explore these ideas in diverse ways to work with narrative and new forms of materiality. With the access to digital formats, of the internet and the digitalisation of film, artists are now able to appropriate films to create different and innovative approaches to collage. This makes us look anew at, and re-address, the familiarity of moving image, media and the cinema space; a hybridised 'cinematic' experience.

I have re-worked an existing film piece,The Six Monst Beautiful Minutes in the History of Cinema into a wall sized print for the exhibition.

There will also be a catalogue launched at the London leg of the show, more details here

Possession

I am delighted to be showing in Possession (1) at BACC in Bangkok alongside some fine artists, like Michael Day, Doug Fishbone and Susan Collins. The show is curated by Brian Curtin and Steve Dutton and "explores the potential for artists to work with questions of authorship and subjectivity, whilst engaging with the pervasive influence of internet culture and contemporary visual reproduction."
For Possession (1) I will be showing a new Reconfigure Painting Paul Delaroche's The Execution of Lady Jane Grey which will be created by blowing up my original painting on a small print to a large wall print, which is the same size as the original painting. The same process will happen on two companion pieces, each of which is also based on a painting from London's National gallery.
